Welcome to the MoviesAtWork Help Guide.

Here you will find out how to use all the main features of this site to borrow and lend DVDs, Videos, CDs, Books and Video Games with your work colleagues.

If you are a first time visitor to the site then the best place to start is the Website Tour.

Please also refer to our Frequently Asked Questions [FAQ] page which also provides lots of useful advice on how to use our site.
1   Introduction
1.1 About MoviesAtWork ...

If you love watching movies then you've come to the right site. If you like watching them for free then you're definitely in the right place! Like most people you probably have a collection of DVDs and Videos that you've collected over the years. You may also occasionally lend your DVDs to friends and it can be fun talking about the movie afterwards. That's what MoviesAtWork is all about - making the lending and borrowing of DVDs, Videos, CDs, Books and Video Games easy and fun.

1.2 In a Nutshell ...
  • As soon as you've chosen your workplace you can start browsing the collections of items available to borrow. You can browse by categories (e.g. DVDs > Action and Adventure), search for an item or you can see all items available from a particular MoviesAtWork member.
  • Before you can borrow something you need to register (FREE and it only takes a minute or two) and then you can make a request to the owner of the item you want, which will send an email to them.
  • The owner then decides if they want to lend the item to you. They can check your "feedback rating" to see if other lenders have anything good or bad to say about you.
  • When you pick up the item from the owner the due back date is set and you have the item on loan for one week.
  • At the end of the week you can return the item or you can ask to extend the loan for an additional week or more.
  • The lender can leave feedback on you - positive if you return it on time, negative if you're late or if you've damaged the item in some way.
  • To encourage people to list all their items in the database there is a credit system. You start with five credits and earn additional credits each time you loan out an item. You spend a credit each time you borrow something.
  • That's it! Read on to find out more details on each of these tasks.
1.3 It's not just about movies ...

MoviesAtWork currently supports lending DVDs, Videos, CDs, Books and Video Games. However in future this could be expanded to include any other categories such as children's toys, baby items or tools. Please send us your ideas on what you want to see on the site and we'll build the things in most demand. Use the contact us page to feedback your ideas.

  7. If you can't find the DVD in the MoviesAtWork database search results, you may need to create a new item record in our database. Click on the Create New DVD Title button and follow the instructions. (It may take several days for new titles to be validated and made available for other members to select)

  4. Sometimes you may want to temporarily remove some of your DVDs from public listing. You can do this by selecting DVDs with a tick, and then clicking on the Hide button. You can reverse this action by repeating the selection and clicking Un-Hide.
5   Borrowing Items[Top of Page]
There are several different ways to search and browse for items to borrow:
  • Click on the main tabs at the top of the page for Books, DVD, CD, Video and Video Games. Within these pages search for titles using the search box or browse categories by clicking on the category names.
  • Use the quick search box in the header area of every page.
  • You can list items owned by a particular member. Click on the My MoviesAtWork tab and then click on the Member Directory link. Search for a member and then click on Member's Items to see their items.
5.1 Making a Request
  1. Once you have found the item you want you need to ask the owner if you can borrow it. Tick the checkbox next to the item and click on the Request Loan button.
  2. You are now taken to the Loan Request page.
  3. When you request a loan an email is sent to the item owner - you can include a special message in this email using the comments box. e.g. suggest a date and time that you would like to collect the item.
  4. Click on Request It! to ask for a normal loan which will cost you one credit.
  5. Click on "Freebie" Request if you know the person well and want to borrow the item without paying any credits for it.
  6. After requesting a loan an email is sent to the owner. They can then decide to either accept or reject your request. If they accept your request an email will be sent to you explaining what to do next.
  7. When you go to collect the item the owner will "Check Out" the item to you and you will need to return it to them within a week.
  8. You can check on the status of your loan request at any time by going to My MoviesAtWork and then clicking on Items I'm Borrowing.
6   Tell your friends[Top of Page]

To get the most from MoviesAtWork you really need to encourage as many people as possible in your workplace to join up. This site provides a convenient way to do this via the Tell Your Friends page which sends an email to your friends to help them get started.

  2. You need to select what sort of email to send out - i.e. to people in your workplace, or to friends in other workplaces.
  3. List all the email addresses separated by commas.
  4. Chose whether to send the email anonymously or with your name included (It will be much more effective if you include your name)
  5. Click on Preview to check what the email will look like before sending, or just click on Send Email to send it straight away.
7   Lending Items[Top of Page]
7.1  Accepting and Rejecting Requests

In a previous section of the help file we showed you how to list your items to make them available for other members of your workplace to borrow. Once you've done this you just sit back and wait for someone to request a loan. This will trigger an email to be sent to you which will tell you who is asking for a loan and which item they want to borrow. The email* will contain several links in it which you can use as follows:

  • If you want to accept the loan there will be a link which you can click on that will take you to the accept loan page. From here click on the Accept Request button to accept the request. An email will be sent back to the requester telling them that their request has been accepted.
  • If you want to reject the loan there will be another link which will take you to the reject request page. From here click on Reject Request which will send an email back explaining you do not want to lend them the item.
  • There will also be another link which you can click which will show you more details on the requester, including their feedback rating. This is useful to help you decide if you want to lend the item to this person.

[*You do not need to keep this email. You can also Accept and Reject requests directly in the web site by going to the My MoviesAtWork tab and then selecting the Items I'm Lending page.]

7.2  "Checking Out" Items
You check out items when the requester has collected the item from you. This will set the due back date.
  1. When you accept a loan request you will receive an email from MoviesAtWork containing contact details for the member who has asked to borrow your item. Contact them and agree a time for them to collect the item from you.
  2. When you have handed the item over to the requester, go to the My MoviesAtWork tab and then select the Items I'm Lending page.
  3. Tick the checkbox next to the item you have just lent and click on Check Out Item.
  4. You will then be asked to confirm that you want to check the item out by clicking on the Check Out Item button again.
  5. The due date back is set to one week from the current date and an email will be sent to you and the requester confirming this due back date.
7.3  "Checking In" Items

When the DVD is returned to you, you need to "check in" the DVD. This sets the status of the item back to available so that other members in your workplace can borrow it.

  1. Click on the My MoviesAtWork tab and then click on Items I'm Lending.
  2. Find the item that has been returned and tick the check box next to it to select it.
  3. Click on the Item Returned button.
  4. You are taken to the return item page where you can check the details are correct before clicking on Item Returned again to check the item back into your collection so it is available for lending out again.
  5. You will now be prompted to optionally leave some feedback on the member who borrowed your item.
8   Giving and Receiving Feedback[Top of Page]

After you have lent an item to someone you are prompted to leave some feedback on them - positive if they have returned it on time, negative if they were late to return it or if they have damaged the item. You can look up a member's feedback history at any time, which can be helpful when you receive requests to borrow your items.

8.1  Giving Feedback
  1. You are prompted to leave feedback (i) when you check items back into your collection after they have been returned to you or (ii) seven days after the due back date if the item has not been returned yet.

  3. You can navigate to the feedback page at any time by clicking on the My MoviesAtWork tab and then click on the Give Feedback link in the left hand list of pages.
  4. You will now see a list of items requiring your feedback. Select one by ticking on the check box and then click Give Feedback
  5. Now select Positive, Negative or Neutral and you can optionally leave a short comment.
  6. Click on Save to save your feedback.
